It is a source of Lithia for glazes. A strong flux, beginning to aid in the melting of glazes at 1472°F. Used extensively as a secondary flux in leadless ^06 and ^5 glazes. Improves the brightness of glazes, and increases the firing range. Also reduces thermal expansion of glazes.

Lithium Carbonate is roughly 40% Li₂O and 60% CO₂. It is preferred to Lithium Oxide in glazes as it is only slightly soluble in water. The coarse grade can be used for textural effects in glazes.
